DRY NEEDLING IN WICHITA, KS

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a specific treatment technique where a solid filament needle is inserted through the skin and into muscular trigger points to decrease pain and improve function. It is called “dry” needling because no solution is injected into the tissue as with a typical injection. The needle itself, and the effects it produces within the tissue are the treatment.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

The mechanical stimulation of the muscle by the needle produces a local twitch response or rapid depolarization of muscle fibers. This causes a relaxation of the tight muscle and decreased pain and dysfunction due to a reduction in muscular compression on joint, nerve, and vascular tissue. Dry needling also helps to decrease chemical irritation in an injured area and initiate a healing response in the affected tissue.

What Types of Conditions Respond Well to Dry Needling?

Is Dry Needling the Same as Acupuncture?

While dry needling uses the same tool as acupuncture, a thin sterile needle, it is for a different therapeutic purpose. Dry needling is based on Western medical principles and evidence-based research. It targets the painful area to restore normal muscular function and to decrease pain. Traditional acupuncture practitioners follow the Eastern Medicine principle of using the insertion of needles along pathways (meridians) to normalize the flow of energy (Chi) throughout the body to cure syndromes.

What Can I Expect Following Treatment?

Improvements in flexibility, range of motion and decreased pain are often experienced immediately following treatment and typically continue to improve further with subsequent sessions. It is also normal to experience soreness or fatigue in the areas treated for a few hours up to two days. This soreness following treatment typically lessens with subsequent treatments.

Does Dry Needling Hurt?

You may or may not feel the insertion of the fine needle, but when contact is made with the dysfunctional tissue, an aching sensation or muscular twitch is often experienced.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS IN WICHITA, KS ARE SAYING ABOUT DRY NEEDLING

"I am so thankful I found Melissa! I suddenly and unexpectedly found myself with severe sciatic pain to the point I couldn't sit or climb into bed without crying. As a mom of three young children, it was very difficult to do normal activities with them.

I was trapped in pain.

My doctor recommended we start with physical therapy since I was unable to have an MRI because of an existing condition.

Melissa listened attentively to my history and took the time to put together a plan that would work for me.

I started seeing results almost immediately from dry needling, deep tissue massage, and traction.

I began to get back to normal life.

Melissa was also excellent in demonstrating exercises and stretches to help relieve my pain between appointments with her.

The Open Range Physical Therapy model was also very convenient for me. Melissa was able to come to my house so I didn't have to find a babysitter or drag my kids to my appointments.

Communication and scheduling is a breeze and I couldn't be happier."

"Melissa is wonderful to work with! She has helped me with numerous lower leg, lower back, and hip issues related to

running injuries.

Melissa was able to locate and correct a hip flexor issue within 4-6 weeks of dry needling.

I had previously been to 4 doctors (2 sports, 1 general, and 1 hip specialist), a sports chiropractor, had multiple injections, and multiple MRIs over 8 months with no relief.

She is kind, caring, knowledgeable, and honest.

I appreciate that she is an avid cyclist and enjoys an active lifestyle; she can absolutely relate to the misery of not being able to get out there.

I would send my family and friends to Melissa, she is now my first call when I have any issues!"
